Every Discovery Has a Story: Why Scientists Make Great STEAM Heroes
Why do we remember stories we watch, listen to, or read so much better, differently than all the other things we learned during our school years?
Many times, we don’t remember a mathematical equation, formula, or scientific law, but we do remember the people who made those discoveries, especially if there was something about the challenge they faced or the curiosity that led them to make that discovery.
That is exactly the idea behind STEAM Heroes. Science is not just about learning facts and theories, laws, and principles, but also about people behind those discoveries. Every discovery has its own story, its own hero. It is created by the unique path that led to it, and it is precisely such a story that has the power to inspire the next and future generations of students.
Why stories matter in STEAM education
Students often view science and math as collections of difficult concepts that only exist in textbooks. When learning focuses exclusively on definitions, formulas, and procedures, it can be difficult to understand why these topics are important , or how they have developed over time.
Introducing the people behind the discoveries changes that perspective. Learning about their lives, the lives of scientists, inventors, and mathematicians helps students understand that progress is driven by curiosity, persistence, creativity, and collaboration. Great discoveries are not made overnight. They were the result of asking questions, making mistakes, testing ideas, and refusing to give up.
This human side of science makes learning more engaging and relevant. Students begin to see that scientists were ordinary people who faced obstacles, challenged accepted ideas, and continued to search for solutions despite setbacks.
More than famous names
Most people can recognise names like Isaac Newton or Albert Einstein. Yet the history of science is filled with remarkable individuals whose achievements deserve just as much attention.
The STEAM Heroes project aims to change this by introducing students to a balanced collection of 31 historical STEAM Heroes, representing different disciplines, cultures and backgrounds. Some are widely known, while others have received far less recognition despite making extraordinary contributions.
The project highlights both well-known and lesser-known scientists whose work continues to shape our lives today.
Students will discover inspiring figures such as:
- Ada Lovelace, whose visionary ideas laid the foundations of computer programming;
- Florence Nightingale, who transformed healthcare by applying mathematics and statistics to medical practice;
- Alan Turing, whose groundbreaking work helped shape modern computer science and artificial intelligence ;
- Pierre de Fermat, whose mathematical ideas challenged generations of mathematicians;
- Mary Anning, whose fossil discoveries revolutionized our understanding of Earth’s history;
- Thales of Miletus, one of the earliest thinkers to explain natural phenomena through observation and reasoning rather than myth;
- and many other scientists.
Although their stories are very different, they all have one thing in common. None of them knew they were making history while they were doing their work. They were simply driven by curiosity and a desire to understand the world a little better.
Breaking stereotypes through role models
Representation matters in education. For many years, scientific achievements have often been presented through a limited number of historical figures, unintentionally reinforcing stereotypes about who belongs in STEAM fields.
STEAM Heroes promotes a more inclusive perspective by presenting both male and female role models and celebrating diverse scientific achievements. This approach helps students see that talent, creativity and curiosity are not defined by gender or background.
For many young learners, especially girls and students who may lack confidence in science or mathematics, seeing inspiring role models with different life experiences can make a meaningful difference. It encourages them to imagine themselves as future scientists, engineers, mathematicians or innovators.
Learning through the lives of scientists
The historical figures – scientists featured in STEAM Heroes are much more than historical biographies.Their stories become the starting point for engaging learning experiences that connect history with modern STEAM education.
The STEAM Heroes project is fundamentally composed of modules that combine several complementary resources: a narrative-driven video, an interactive digital adventure, a hands-on manipulation activity, and a pedagogical sequence.
These resources encourage students to experience how scientists think by asking questions, testing ideas, discussing possibilities, and searching for solutions. Through active learning, students develop critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills while discovering the people behind some of history’s greatest scientific ideas.
Inspiring the next generation
Perhaps the most important lesson these STEAM Heroes left behind is that every discovery begins with curiosity.
Long before their names appeared in textbooks, they were simply people trying to solve a problem, understand a phenomenon or answer a question that fascinated them.
That is why they make such powerful STEAM Heroes.
They remind us that science is not a collection of finished answers but an ongoing process of exploration. More importantly, they show students that the next important idea could begin with a question asked in today’s classroom.
Because behind every scientific breakthrough lies a story worth telling.
And maybe, one day, one of today’s students will write the next one.
