Ada Lovelace

Suggested age group for the activities:

Ada Lovelace was an English mathematician, the only legitimate child of the famous poet Lord Byron. Her mother encouraged her to study mathematics and science instead of poetry, hoping to steer her away from her father’s influence. Lovelace became known for her work with inventor Charles Babbage on his Analytical Engine, an early mechanical computer design. In her notes on the machine, she described step-by-step instructions for it to perform calculations, including the idea of repeating a set of instructions, a process known today as looping. For this work, she is often considered the first computer programmer, even though the machine was never actually built during her lifetime.
